Neighborhood Focus:
Kentington Heights
COMING SOON: map showing location relative to NC-54.
Kentington Heights is off Fayetteville Road, just south of the Streets of Southpoint mall.
Description:
Kentington Heights is a small neighborhood that's really gotten the worst of the development boom of Southwest Durham. (Can someone write this accurately?) After several homes were built in this subdivision, sewage contamination was discovered in their wells. The residents struggled unsuccessfully for years to get water and sewer service from the City of Durham. Obviously the situation has had a huge negative impact on their property values; many lots were never built on.
When the Streets of Southpoint Mall was built just north of their subdivision, developers eased residents' opposition by offering to extend water and sewer lines beyond the mall to Kentington Heights. But a new idea formed: a group of residents (led by a political activist) are now trying to get their property rezoned to commercial, so that they can sell their land at a good (that is, very very good) price.
It's a very interesting variation on the rezoning theme.
